The steering wheel wears out faster than the rest of the interior. Hands, sweat and hand creams wear down the top layer of the leather: first comes a shine, then the leather loses its color and starts to crack. That shine isn't dirt that wasn't washed off — it's worn-away grain that no amount of ordinary cleaning will bring back.
Restoration means rebuilding what's been worn away. I clean and degrease the leather, recreate the grain and apply a color matched to the original. The slick shine gives way to a matte, grippy surface again. I work alone, so I do the steering wheel myself — just like every car that comes into the studio.
