An automatic wash runs one set of brushes over dozens of cars a day. Grit from the previous car ends up on your paint and leaves micro-scratches — so-called spider webbing — most visible in direct sunlight on dark colors. That's why I wash every car by hand using the two-bucket method: one with shampoo, the other for rinsing the mitt, so dirt never goes back onto the bodywork.
